Conditions in the Trenches

Assignment Due: Monday, February 14

Task 1 – Imagine you are a front-line soldier. Write a letter to a significant other explaining what you have been doing and how the war is going. Explain what life is like in the trenches. Be descriptive so the recipient can visualize life on the front line. Use as many key words as possible (listed on assignment packet).

Task 2 – Unfortunately, officers censored letters that were sent home. They took out information that could help the other side, as well as negative comments about food, conditions, and the state of the war to keep up the spirits of people back home.

Read through your letter. You must edit out any information that is not allowed for the reasons mentioned above. Highlight the sentences that you cannot include due to this censorship.

Task 3 – Complete page two of the trenches assignment. Read the letter and answer the four questions that follow on a separate sheet of paper.
